“Germania with Saying”

Catalog No. 177

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Lieb Vaterland, magst ruhig sein,
fest steht und treu die Wacht am Rhein.”

(Dear Fatherland, rest easily,
the Watch at the Rhine stands firm and true.)
“Gott mit uns, einig und frei, brüderlich treu.
In Leid und Lust sich deutsch bewusst.”

(God with us, united and free, loyal brothers.
In grief and joy remember we are German.)

“Germania” is an ancient symbol personifying the strength, unity and liberty of Germanic peoples. The depiction here is taken from the “Niederwalddenkmal”, a monument erected near Rudesheim on the Rhine River following the Franco-Prussian War in commemoration of the founding of the German Empire.

The text beginning “Lieb Vaterland….” is taken from the chorus of “Die Wacht am Rhein” (The Watch on the Rhine), a German patriotic anthem, written in 1840 by Max Schneckenburger and set to music in 1854 by Karl Wilhelm.
