Central image depicts Charlemagne or Charles the Great (747-814), whose empire included much of western and central Europe. Side images include Pipin of Harstal (640-714), a great grandfather of Charlemagne, and Charles the Hammer (688-741), Pipin’s son and one of Charlemagne’s grandfathers, who is generally credited with founding the Carolingian Dynasty.
