Senior Grande Mug and Stein Variations*

by Dick Cramer

As hard as Senior Grande, CS-6, is to find, one would think there just couldn’t be any variations of this 1977 Anheuser-Busch stein. Wrong again! With the help of fellow ABA member, Ben Smith, we will walk you through the eight known variations of this stein. Three of these are more correctly identified as the lidded version, CSL-4. Anheuser-Busch dates the lidded version as 1975 in its Steins, Vol. I book.

The first four variations are basically lidded, non-lidded, reversed color backgrounds (blue background instead of normal tan), with or without a basket, and the inscription HB on the mug. Although the table cloth in the basket is red and white checkered, it is noted as no color. The reason for this is that the portion between the man’s leg and the table leg has no color. The next two variations, #5 and #6 (see chart below), have that piece colored red and white.

As new steins show up, we’ll try to keep a record of known variations. Examine your Senior Grande, if you’re lucky enough to have one, and see if it matches the variations in the chart. If not, please let me know.
