Matthias Girmscheid Stein Catalog
Founded in 1884 in the town of Höhr, the firm of Matthias Girmscheid merged briefly with the firm of Gilles & Sohn in the 1920s, no doubt in an effort to survive in Germany’s difficult post-war economy. However, by 1930 the partnership had disolved and the two companies again began producing independently. The Girmscheid factory is still in operation today, producing a wide range of salt-glazed stoneware products. For more about Girmscheid, see “Introduction to Girmscheid Steins”.
This on-line catalog has been developed specifically for use in the Beer Stein Library. By its very nature, it will continually be a work in process, designed to allow for updating as new facts are discovered. End-users are encouraged to contribute to that effort by submitting new information and/or photographs via e-mail addressed to [email protected].
Development of the catalog would not have been possible without a substantial contribution of information, photographs and expertise from the late Les Hopper, former president of Stein Collectors International and long time Girmscheid collector. His generosity and willingness to share information during his lifetime set an outstanding example that we hope others will be encouraged to follow. This catalog is dedicated to his memory.
