Homing pigeons are domesticated Rock Pigeons, bred for both speed and their innate ability to return to a home base over long distances. Prior to the advent of reliable battlefield radio communications, homing pigeons often provided mobile military units with the capacity to quickly communicate with headquarters. Practical applications for the homing pigeon’s message carrying capabilities, both military and non-military, had largely wound down by the end of World War II, and their breeding today is limited primarily to hobbyists.

Price Range: $350-$500
