“Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium.
Freude trinken alle Wesen an den Brüsten der Natur.”

(Joy, beautiful spark of the gods, daughter of Elysium,
all creatures drink of joy at nature's breasts.)

Central image depicts German poet, playwright and philosopher Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) and his wife Charlotte (1766-1826).

Text is taken from the first and third stanzas of Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”, written in 1785, but perhaps best known for being featured by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony.
