“King Solomon”

Catalog No. 355

Pottery (Siegburg style), relief, 6.0L, pewter lid, signed “PD” (Peter Dümler).

Text:
“Ein weiser Mann ist stark und ein vernuenftiger Mann ist maechtig von Kraeften.”
(A wise man is strong and a reasonable man is mighty with power.)

Front panel images include Solomon’s Temple, Solomon on horseback and Solomon rendering judgement. Side images replace Solomon on horseback with Judicia, the Greek goddess of justice, and Fortitudo, a Roman goddess and personification of courage and bravery.

Although this stein was initially produced circa 1904, full-color examples (bottom center) have so far been seen only with post-WWI markings. A more primitive, unnumbered precursor to the numbered version also exists, configured to resemble an actual 16th century Siegburg Schnelle (bottom right). All versions are signed “PD” and dated 1883 in the mold, presumbably the year that the precursor version was created.
