“The First Kiss”

Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Scene taken from a poem entitled “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a baron’s daughter. Original engraving entitled “Der erste Kuss” (The First Kiss) done in 1888 by Carl Schweninger (1854-1903).

Some examples exist with the base marked “G.M.T. & Bro.” (a New York importer) and with a threaded relief lid inlay bearing the trade mark of the Keeley Brewing Company, which operated in Chicago, IL between 1878 and 1920 (below).

Same model number applied to a stein entitled Man Raising Stein.
