The Sonntagsjäger (Sunday Hunter) in the central image of this stein is the man wearing the top hat and duster standing to the left of the scene, apparently listening to the “real” hunters tell their tales. The prototypical Sonntagsjäger was first seen in an 1845 oil painting by Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885). Note the similarities (below) between Spitzweg’s Sunday Hunter and the one on the stein.
