Monkey and Tomcat with Saying

Catalog No. 1106

Pottery, threaded relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Füllen und leeren, nimmer entbehren.”
(Fill up and empty, never be without it.)

To appreciate the intent of the decoration on this stein, it must be understood that monkeys (Affen), in Germany and elsewhere, are symbolic of drunkenness (monkey on one’s back), and that the tomcat (Kater) is both a German symbol and idiomatic expression for a hangover.

Price Range: $90-$125
