Man Playing Psaltery

Catalog No. (T46)

Pottery, threaded relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

The Psaltery is an ancient instrument that began as simply a board with gut strings stretched between pegs. It was played by plucking with either one’s fingers or a “plectra”. Later versions, including the one depicted on this stein, were typically in the form of a hollow box (or “soundboard”) and metal strings.
