“The Hostile Brothers”

Catalog No. 162

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 1.0L, figural lid (tower roof), signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

Text:
“Es halten eine Liebste zwei Brüder am Rhein,
um die sie kämpfen im Mondenschein.
Da tritt zu ihnen die Jungfrau hin,
enthaltet des Kampfes euch im grimmen Sinn.”

(Two brothers have a sweetheart on the Rhine,
over which they are fighting in the moonlight.
The maiden walks up to them,
and asks them to stop fighting with evil thoughts.)

Taken from an old German legend set in the Rhine castles of Sternberg and Liebenstein, the scene on this stein shows two young knights and brothers, Henry and Conrad, as well as the maiden Angela, whom they both loved. As might be anticipated, the love triangle was responsible for a great deal of suffering and ultimately resulted in the untimely death of all three individuals.
