Central image is taken from the legend surrounding a 13th century lyrical poet, first told in the 16th century Tannhäuserlied and later in the Wagnerian Opera Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf der Wartburg. According to the legend, Tannhäuser had an affair with Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and love, and lived with her for a time in Venusberg, her mountain retreat.
