Renaissance Drinker

Catalog No. 650

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 3.0L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Wer seine arbeit redlich thut,
dem schmeckt der Schoppen doppelt gut.”

(To he who does his work honestly,
the pint tastes twice as good.)

Although not specified on the stein itself, the central image is likely intended to depict Sir John Falstaff, one of the most famous comic characters in all English literature, appearing in four of Shakespeare’s plays and later in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Falstaff, first staged in 1893.
