Gymnastics Symbols

Catalog No. 857

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 1.5L, pewter lid, signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

Text:
“Turnerei und Gerstensaft schaffen echte Manneskraft.”
(Gymnastics and barley juice produce true virility.)
“Es lebe hoch die Turnerei, sie macht uns froh, sie macht uns frei.”
(Long live gymnastics, you make us happy, you make us free.)

The “4F” symbol central to this design represents a movement begun by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, who is credited with responsibility for organizing the first gymnastic clubs (Turn Vereine) in Germany during the early 19th century. The four Fs stand for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei” (Fresh, Pious, Happy, Free).
