“Hoch lebe die alte deutsche Stadt, wo Hans Sachs gesungen hat.”
(Long live the old German city, where Hans Sachs has sung.)
Hans Sachs, referred to in the text, was a shoemaker, poet and a German master singer. He is remembered today largely as a result of being cast as the leading character in Richard Wagner’s opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Master Singers of Nuremberg).
The Frauenadler (eagle woman), depicted both on the lid and in the lower portion of the central image, has been a symbol of Nuremberg since at least the 17th century.
