Sir John Falstaff is one of the most famous comic characters in all English literature, appearing in four of Shakespeares plays and later in Giuseppe Verdis final opera Falstaff, which was inspired principally by Falstaffs follies in Shakespeares The Merry Wives of Windsor. Bardolph appears in both works as Falstaffs drunken companion. This particular depiction is taken from a painting by Eduard von Grtzner (1846-1925).
