“Kriemhilde Bids Farewell to Her Brothers”

Catalog No. 1173

Pottery, relief, 2.0L, pewter lid, signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

Text:
“Ein Glas beim Freund ist gut gemeint.”
(A glass with a friend is well meant.)
“Ein frischer Trunk hälts Leben jung.”
(A fresh drink keeps you young.)

There are two episodes in the 12th century German poem, Das Nibelungenlied, that might have served as the inspiration for this stein. In the first, Kriemhilde is about to leave her castle at Worms to return with her new husband, the hero Siegfried, to his homeland in the Netherlands. In the second, following Siegfried’s death, Kriemhilde once again departs from Worms, this time in order to be married to Etzel (Attila), King of the Huns.
