Munich Child

Catalog No. 2006

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 2.0L, pewter lid, signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

“Wer nie bei einer vollen Mass, im Hofbräuhaus sass
der weiss es nicht welch grosse Gnad, der liebe Gott dem Bayern gab.”

(He who never sat with a full stein in the Hofbräuhaus
doesn’t know what a large favor the loving God gave to Bavaria.)

Created as the coat-of-arms or archival seal of Munich in 1239, the centrally depicted Münchner Kindl (Munich Child) has evolved from a hooded monk standing in front of Munich’s gate to a charming child and symbol of the city.
