“Rip Van Winkle”

Catalog No. (X9)

Pottery, relief, 1.0L, pewter lid, signed “KB” (Anton Killian “Karl” Beuler).

The story of Rip Van Winkle comes to us from the pen Washington Irving, originally appearing in The Sketch Book in 1820. It tells the tale of a Dutchman who falls asleep in the Catskill mountains and sleeps for 20 years, completely missing the American Revolution. Given the subject-matter, it’s reasonable to assume that that this stein was designed primarily for American audiences.
