“Der Mai ist gekommen, die Bäume schlagen aus,
da bleibe wer Lust hat mit Sorgen zu Haus.”
(May has arrived, the trees are bursting out,
may those who have problems stay at home.)
Central image is taken from an illustration by Kaspar Kögler (1838-1923), part of an 1890 mural that once graced the Wiesbaden Ratskeller, but was sadly destroyed in World War II.
Text is from a poem entitled “Burschenlust” (Young Man’s Pleasure), written in 1841 Emanuel Geibel and set to music in 1843 by Justus Wilhelm Lyra.
