sie lagen auf Bärenhäuten und tranken immer noch eins.”

(The old Germans lived on both sides of the Rhine,
they laid on bearskins and always drank one more.)

Central image is taken from an illustration by Heinrich Schlitt (1849-1923), part of an 1890 mural that once graced the Wiesbaden Ratskeller, but was sadly destroyed in World War II. Text is derived from a song entitled “Sitz ich in froher Zecher Kreise” (I Sit in the Happy Circle of Revelers), written in 1880 by Ludolf Waldmann.
