Catalog No. 316
Pottery or stoneware, 0.5L, inlaid lid.
Text:
“Thu’ des Guten nicht zuviel, sonst ist’s aus mit gutem Spiel.”
(Don’t have too much of a good thing, otherwise the good times will be over.) Later versions replaced the original text with:
“Das Bier macht heiter, den Kopf gescheidter.”
(Beer makes you happy, the head clever.)
The unusual side scenes on this stein depict a large man riding on the back of a wild bear or boar, which in Germany symbolizes drunkenness. He is also being tempted with food by imp-like creatures (the devil’s minions), providing what was almost certainly intended to be a pictorial warning against gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins in Christian theology.
Price Ranges Full-color: $60-$80 Ltd-color: $50-$70
