“Lindenwirtin”

Catalog No. 141

Pottery, relief, 2.0L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Keinen Tropfen im Becher mehr,
und der Beutel schlaff und leer,
lechzend Herz und Zunge,
angetan hat mirs dein Wein,
deiner Äuglein heller Schein,
Lindenwirtin du junge!”

(No more drops in the beaker,
and the purse is slack and empty,
with a parched heart and tongue,
smitten am I with your wine,
and your eyes’ bright shine,
Linden hostess so young!)

The text on this stein is the first verse from the poem “Die Lindenwirtin”, written by Rudolph Baumbach in 1876 and set to music in 1878 by Franz Wilhelm Abt. The poem honors Ännchen Schumacher (1860-1935), perhaps the most famous innkeeper in German history and a popular figure with German students.

This stein also carries a Thewalt mark.

Same model number applied to a stein displaying Scrollwork with Saying. See also No. 145.

Price Range: $150-$225
