A Schützenliesel was a waitress at German shooting matches (Schützenfeste), which were popular social events during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image on this stein is taken from an 1881 painting by Friedrich von Kaulbach (below).

The “Catalog No.” for this stein (177a) is provided by a hand-inked base number identifying the transfer decoration, which was applied to an unnumbered body supplied by Merkelbach & Wick.
