Symbols of Drunkenness

Catalog No. 430

Pottery, etched, 1.0L, pewter lid.

Text:
Ein wahrer Zecher frchtet nie den Affen und das Katervieh.
(A real drinker never fears the monkey and the tomcat.)

To appreciate the meaning of the text, it must be understood that the tomcat (Kater) is both a German symbol and idiomatic expression for a hangover, and that monkeys (Affen), in Germany and elsewhere, are symbolic of drunkenness (monkey on ones back).
