(He who drinks too much is a fool.
He who hates to drink is yet a bigger one.)

Although not specified on the stein itself, the central image is likely intended to depict Till Eulenspiegel, a merry trickster from German folklore, renowned for practical jokes intended to expose the foibles and vices of his contemporaries.
