The theme of this stein is taken from the final act of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Master Singers of Nuremberg), first performed in Munich in 1868. The scene depicts Eva, a goldsmith’s daughter, placing a wreath on the head of Walther von Stolzing, a Franconian Knight, in recognition of the fact that he has just won the master singers’ competition, not to mention the hand of Eva in marriage.
