Text is the title of a song written in 1849 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel recalling the annihilation of three Roman legions by an alliance of Germanic tribes in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest (9 A.D.). The battle effectively put a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.
