This is a late 19th century interpretation of a theme first seen on steins produced by potters in the Upper Franconian town of Creussen dating back to around 1620. According to Christian doctrine, the twelve apostles were personally selected by Jesus Christ from among his followers to spread the teachings of Christianity.
