Catalog No. 248

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 3.0L, pewter lid, body configuration varies.

Text:
“Ohne Lieb und ohne Wein,
was ist unser Leben?”

(Without love and without wine,
what is our existence?)
“Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib, Gesang,
der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang.”

(He who does not love wine, women, song,
remains a fool for all his life.)

This is a late 19th century interpretation of a form that dates back to around 1550. Bearded man jugs (Bartmannkrüge) feature the face of a bearded man at the neck representing the mythical woodland Wild Man of Germanic folklore, a symbol of strength and endurance.
