The central character on this stein represents �Hermann� (or �Arminius� as he was known to the Romans), who successfully led an alliance of Germanic tribes in the crushing defeat of three Roman legions at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D. The battle effectively put a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.
