Catalog No. 1201
Pottery, relief, 2.5L, set-on figural lid (Diana).
“Mit dem Pfeil, dem Bogen, durch Gebirg und Tal,
kommt der Schütz gezogen früh im Morgenstrahl.”
(With the arrow, the bow, through mountains and valleys,
comes the hunter a-wandering early in the morning light.)
Text is the first verse of a hunting song written in 1803 by Friedrich von Schiller and set to music by Bernhard Anselm Weber in 1804.
Diana (lid figure) was the Roman goddess of the hunt, who was believed to have the power to communicate with and control animals.
This stein exists in two virtually identical versions numbered 1201 and 11201 (presumably later). Sale prices tend to be in the same general range for both.
