Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or �Turnvater Jahn�, is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse.

Text is taken from a song entitled �Ich hab� mich ergeben� (I Have Devoted Myself), written in 1820 by Hans Ferdinand Ma�mann.
