Catalog No. 2759

Stoneware, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid (shown with pressed metal lid).

The swastika, eagle and DRL in the central shield of the version of this stein pictured at the right represent the Deutscher Reichsbund fr Leibesbungen (German Physical Education Federation), which from 1934 until 1945 was the Third Reichs sports umbrella organization.

The DT in the shield on versions that presumably predated 1934 (below left) was the acronym for the Deutsche Turnerschaft (German Gymnastics Federation), an association of gymnastics clubs founded in 1868, replaced by the DRL in 1934 and formally dissolved in 1936.

The bust above the shield represents Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or Turnvater Jahn, who is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse.
