Catalog No. 5153

Stoneware, transfer, 0.5L, pewter lid, signed “FR” (Franz Ringer).

Text:
“Gruss aus München”
(Greetings from Munich)

This body style served as the base for a well-known series of Franz Ringer decorations featuring the Münchner Kindl (Munich Child), a long-standing symbol of the city. The Munich Child is depicted in this series as a participant in various occupations, images that also include ancient guild symbols. Currently known to exist are versions depicting the Munich Child as a brewer (right), scholar/scientist (below), stone mason (bottom left) and musician (bottom center), as well as a painter (bottom right).

Same model number applied to a variety of other steins featuring Ringer artwork, as well as to an undecorated stein with Kölnisch braun (Cologne brown) glaze.
