Text is the title of a poem honoring Heidelberg, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel and set to music in 1872 by Weise von Zimmerman.

The centrally depicted crowned rampant lion on a three-topped mountain has been a heraldic symbol of Heidelberg since the 15th century.
