Both the text and graphics on this stein speak to a military alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, created by treaty in 1879 and remaining in effect through the end of World War I. The central image depicts the friendship between an Austrian and a German soldier. Side images depict Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph (1830-1916) and German Emperor Wilhelm II (1859-1941).
