“Behüt dich Gott, es wär so schön gewesen,
behüt dich Gott, es hat nicht sollen sein.”

(May God watch over you, it would have been so nice,
may God watch over you, it was not meant to be.)

Scene and text taken from a poem (Der Trompeter von Säckingen) written in 1885 by J. Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a baron’s daughter. Original engraving entitled “Abscheid” (Farewell) done in 1888 by Carl Schweninger (1854-1903).

First in a series based on Scheffel’s poem, all numbered 1149, with a following letter (A-?) designating scene and text variations.
