Sometimes found with figural set-on lid.

Central image typically depicts Charlemagne or Charles the Great (747-814), whose empire included much of western and central Europe. Other images include Pipin of Harstal (Pipino, 640-714), a great grandfather of Charlemagne, and Charles the Hammer (Carolus Martellus, 688-741), Pipin�s son and one of Charlemagne�s grandfathers, who is generally credited with founding the Carolingian Dynasty.
