Bearded Man Jug with Tavern Scene

Catalog No. 64

Stoneware, relief, 5.0L, pewter lid.

Text:
“Schon Dr. Luther spricht, Wasser allein thuts freilich nicht.”
(Even Dr. Luther said, water alone does not suffice.)
“Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib und Gesang der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang.”
(He who does not love wine, women and song remains a fool for all his life.)

This is a mid-19th century interpretation of a form that dates back to around 1550. Bearded man jugs (Bartmannkrüge) feature the face of a bearded man at the neck representing the mythical woodland Wild Man of Germanic folklore, a symbol of strength and endurance.
