Biblical Women

Catalog No. 88

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 1.25L, pewter lid.

The first scene (below left) depicts the story of Jesus and the Woman at the Well in Samaria, the second (below center) shows the Jewish patriot Judith holding the severed head of the Babylonian General Holofernes, and the third (below right) is a depiction from the story of Susanna and the Two Elders. Interestingly, the latter two stories are considered apocryphal (of uncertain validity or authorship) by Protestants and are not contained in Protestant Bibles, but do appear in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles, which presumably provides a clue to the religion of the modeler.
