Gambrinus and Gnomes with Saying

Catalog No. 215

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

“Ein guter Trank aus Gerst u. Hopfen,
das sind die besten Nahrungstropfen.”

(A good drink from barley and hops,
these are the best nourishment drops.)

Also exists with Czech text (below right): “At žíje kdo pije.” (Long live he who drinks.)

Gambrinus, “the king of beer”, has long been a universal symbol of beer and brewing. It has been suggested that the character may be drawn from the claimed real-life inventor of hopped malt beer, Jan Primus (Johann I), a 13th-century Belgian Duke and President of the Brussels Guild of Brewers.
