Landsknechte with Saying

Catalog No. 467

Pottery or stoneware, relief, 3.0L, pewter lid.
Produced both with and without pouring spout.
Also found with a figural set-on lid (gnome).

Text:
“Trink im edlen Gerstensaft,
des Weines Geist, des Brodes Kraft.”

(Drink in the noble barley juice,
the spirit of wine, the strength of bread.)

Side images are captioned “Herman Manuel 1541” and “Hans Rudolf Manual 1547”. Hans Rudolf Manuel (1525-1571) was an artist and writer from Berne, Switzerland, to whom both Landsknechte images have been attributed. Whatever relationship may have existed between the images and “Herman Manuel” has apparently been lost to history.

Landsknechte were feudal serfs used for military purposes by their masters. These “soldiers” were often traded between landowners and were, in a sense, the equivalent of modern mercenaries, with the important difference that they were not free to choose their employer.
