“Gut Heil”

“Lasst Kraft uns erwerben mit Herz u. mit Hand,

to live and to die for the Holy Fatherland.)
“Froh der Sinn, und frisch des Turners Muth,
fromm der Herz, der Freiheit höchstes Gut.”

(Happy the spirit, and fresh the Gymnast’s courage,
pious the heart, freedom the highest good.)

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse.

Second text string is taken from a song entitled “Ich hab’ mich ergeben” (I Have Devoted Myself), written in 1820 by Hans Ferdinand Maßmann.
