“Mikado” is an archaic term for the Japanese emperor, and would have been known to few 19th century Europeans but for the wildly popular Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera entitled The Mikado (or, The Town of Titipu), which opened in London in March of 1885. By the end of that year it was being performed on European stages by more than a hundred different companies, and “Mikado” had become part of the popular vernacular.
