“Gut Heil”
(Good health)
“Lasst Kraft uns erwerben mit Herz und Hand,
zu leben und zu sterben für’s heil’ge Vaterland.”

(Let us acquire strength with heart and hand,
to live and to die for the Holy Fatherland.)

The “4F” symbol above the central image represents a movement begun by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or “Turnvater Jahn”, who is credited with responsibility for organizing the first gymnastic clubs (Turn Vereine) in Germany during the early 19th century. The four Fs stand for “Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei” (Fresh, Pious, Happy, Free).

Second text string is from a song entitled “Ich hab’ mich ergeben” (I Have Devoted Myself), written in 1820 by Hans Ferdinand Maßmann.
