“St. Martin”

Stoneware, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid.

The central image on this Art Nouveau period stein honors St. Martin of Tours (c. 316-397). The depiction here recalls an incident occurring early in his life while he was serving as a conscripted Roman soldier in Wintertime, where he is said to have cut his cloak in two with his military sword, giving half to a beggar clad in rags. He was later to become the Bishop of Tours.
