Dancer and Two Women

Catalog No. 434T

Pottery, relief, 1.5L, pewter lid.
Produced both with and without pouring spout.

Text:
“Auf der Alm da gibt’s koa Sünd.”
(In the Alpine meadow there is no sin.)

Although placed in an outdoor setting, the figures in the central image are taken from a painting entitled “Ankunft auf dem Tanzboden” (Arrival on the Dance Floor) by Franz Defregger (1835-1921). Text is the title of an old Tyrolean folk song written by Johann Nepomuk Vogl (1802-1866).

This stein was part of a group produced for the Steinzeugwerke marketing consortium in which Hanke participated between 1911 and 1913. It was designated by the manufacturer as model No. “434T”, but the “T” does not appear in base markings. It is used here, as it was in Steinzeugwerke catalogs, simply to distinguish the item from an earlier Hanke product bearing the same number.
