The roses centrally featured on the crests were symbolic of the House of Habsburg, one of the most important royal families in Europe and the source of Holy Roman Emperors from 1438 through 1740.
This design was copied from an actual Renaissance period piece, one of some forty-five Renaissance replicas first manufactured by Merkelbach in the early 1900s and reproduced regularly thereafter. These items were numbered 1 through 45, duplicating numbers applied to earlier Merkelbach offerings.
